Confessions of a Male Natural Hair Blogger

Confessions of a Male Natural Hair Blogger I hesitated to write this article, but I want to set the record straight about several things within the natural hair community.

Please note that several of the things that I discuss here are not popular things to say in public – meaning they are not politically correct. Honestly, many of the things discussed in this article, I won’t discuss in complete detail because it’s not about creating controversy.

All I ask is that you don’t share this information with anyone. Wink! Wink!

Also, it’s important to note that you may disagree with some of the things discussed in this article and that is perfectly fine. Remember, these are my confessions. You’re more than welcome to disagree and have your own opinion. These are my opinions.

Actually, I like to use different phraseology. These are my confessions and afterwards I promise progression. This article will serve as my journal (or diary) of events. Once this article has been published, I will move on to other things.

The Path to Becoming a Natural Hair “Guru”

First, let’s talk a little bit about who I am for those who don’t know me. I’m Kenneth Byrd, one of the founders of naturalhaircommunity.com. I’ve been writing offline and online, in a freelance capacity for many years, but only recently started blogging consistently.

My previous writing experience was mostly obtained while working for a local newspaper, where I wrote product reviews. I also have some experience writing online for various websites using my real name at times, but mostly pen names. Believe it or not, my most often used pen names are Shirley and Sally, but I’m not providing other details just in case folks start searching on Google.

I’m married to a woman named Jael (which is a pen name), who has been an advocate of natural hair long before I got involved in blogging about natural hair. I remember, several years ago, Jael would stay up really late at night researching various natural hair topics.

This was many years ago, and I’m not good with dates, so less just stick with many years ago. I didn’t know at the time that she was building the base for a future business that would help support our family.

Who knew?

I knew very little about natural hair at the time. Actually, I still wouldn’t consider myself a natural hair guru (even though most gurus are phonies). Just to make sure I’m clear, I consume quite a bit of natural hair information each week because there is so much to research and learn. It takes consistent effort and it’s important to continuously learn about my niche. Within the last few years, I’ve been diving into the science behind black hair care and the amount of information to consume can be mind-boggling – but I really enjoy it.

Before I dive into some of my thoughts about the natural hair community, remember that this article and the content herein remain our little secret.

Confessions of a Male Natural Hair Blogger

There is a big difference in running a business and managing a blog. Unfortunately, many people don’t know the difference. I studied business for several years in college. I was a double major undergrad, majoring in Accounting and Management Information Systems.

I then went out in the “real world” and got a job, worked for a few years, then went back to college and successfully obtained a Master in Business Administration (MBA) degree from a well known University in Alabama.

I’m not telling you this because I think it’s some grand accomplishment, but because I want to make a legitimate point. I have studied multiple business models and analyzed what makes businesses successful and what makes them fail.

That said, it surprises me that there is very little unity in the natural hair community and I’m not talking about having meetups. Okay, maybe just a little, but among the bloggers and “real” businesses it’s so competitive. It’s disappointing that more natural hair businesses don’t work together.

Why do things have to be so adversarial?

Surely you’ve heard the saying “together we stand, divided we fall”. While it may sound like an overly used cliche, look at the Fortune 500 and tell me how many of those companies haven’t used some sort of acquisition and merger strategy as a part of their growth plan. For those who don’t know, the Fortune 500 contains the 500 U.S. corporations ranked by gross revenue. Said differently, this is an annual list of the 500 most profitable US corporations.

It’s weird that so many people say they’re in business to make money, but simply avoid many of the most profitable money making tactics readily available to them. Building relationships with other businesses and working together as a community would really be beneficial for the growth of many small natural hair related businesses (or any African American businesses). Economies of scale are almost a given, but there are many other benefits also.

I don’t intend to turn this into a macroeconomics article, so I’ll just say I’m baffled by the lack of true partnerships within natural hair community. Now, before anyone gets their feelings hurt, this really isn’t meant to be a shot at anyone in particular. It’s just that I see so many opportunities to improve the relative value of the services offered by natural hair related businesses and would like to extend my hand openly. Jael and I are always interested in business partners, with mutual benefit, that collectively add value back to the natural hair community. So, if you have an idea or want to chat about an opportunity – don’t hesitate to contact me directly.

Two Bloggers Beefing Means – One’s Popular, One Isn’t

Have you ever noticed that usually when two bloggers are “beefing” that one of them is relatively popular and the other isn’t popular at all? Obviously, this isn’t always the case, but I have noticed this on several occasions.

Natural Hair Community isn’t about creating controversy, so I won’t provide case studies with names, but if you do a little research you can find some examples. It’s interesting, because this is actually a “marketing technique” that many people in various niche markets have used for years to make a name for themselves. I will explain how it works.

Just think about it – if you call out the biggest name on the street and get a response, then all of a sudden everyone knows who you are too.

Are the women starting these beefs implementing well-crafted marketing plans or simply being messy? Who really knows?

Bottom-line is if you hear somebody dropping names, they likely have a small unsuccessful blog (or product) or they’re starting one relatively soon. Or, they might be one of the bloggers that specialize in controversy. That’s right – there are several bloggers who focus primarily on controversial topics because it drives more traffic and views to their website or product offerings.

We were targeted by a controversial blogger at one point regarding an article that we posted. There were other bloggers writing about our website and offering their opinion on the article. Many naturals were offering comments without reading the article at all. How ridiculous does that sound?

I had one popular blogger, which I completely lost respect for, blast me for supposedly “writing the article”. She made a YouTube video (soliloquy) about the article and wrote a fairly long piece about the article for her blog readers. The funny thing is that I didn’t even write the article.

I made it clear to her that I didn’t write the article and that the article was written by a guest blogger. Honestly, I don’t think she really cared. Her goal was simply to get a few more visitors to her blog, which specializes in controversy.

Call it naivety, if you must, but I didn’t expect that type of rude welcoming into the world of the natural hair blogging. I felt bad, not because of the immature blogger who started the controversy, but because I felt like I played a role in generating this controversy – and that’s really not my style. Plus, Jael was sitting on the side of the bed pissed about how the situation turned out. She literally woke me up at 2am in the morning after seeing the aforementioned YouTube video.

I found the article that the guest blogger wrote very interesting and was being attacked for posting it on my website.

To be clear, I don’t expect people to agree with everything that we post on the website. I do expect people to be tactful and respectful when they disagree, because that’s what I expect from adults. Respectfully disagree, but control your feelings. So, this blogger was likely the first time that I encountered a Natural Hair Nazi.

So, these are some of my confessions. There might have been some things that surprised you. At any rate, that’s the truth (or, my opinion) from deep inside the natural hair community. I hope you enjoyed the article.

Take care.
Kenneth

The Natural Hair Community Blog Hits the App Store!

Natural Hair Community Mobile Application

The Natural Hair Community Blog Hits the App Store!

Jael and I are very excited to announce that the Natural Hair Community mobile application is now available on the Android Market!

We also created an iTunes (or iPhone) version of the application. However, it’s currently under review and testing with Apple. We suspect that it will be approved by Apple within the next couple of weeks and available in iTunes shortly thereafter.

I hinted at this mobile application in our most recent status update. We have been working on several mini-projects that will help us continue to establish our unique value proposition.

We wanted to make following the blog extremely convenient for visitors who read our articles on mobile devices.

The application is unique and unlike any other natural hair mobile application that we’ve seen in the market.

We decided not to recreate the blog entirely. Actually, the only content from the blog that’s available on the mobile application are our articles.

Android Mobile App Download

So, let’s talk about the features on the application:

Get information from the Natural Hair Community website conveniently on your Android phone or iPhone!

The Natural Hair Community application allows you to quickly and easily stay up to date on our latest blog posts, tweets, and YouTube videos.

There’s also a special photo album just for Natural Hair Community app users, with photos of many different natural hair style ideas to help you take your hair to the next level.

Here are some of the key features:

✔ Real-time, up to date articles from our blog, which include all of the same text, images, and links that you’d see on the website in regular internet browsers.

✔ The ability to share articles on Twitter, Facebook and email.

✔ Follow the Twitter feeds for Natural Hair Community. You can also follow the very popular #naturalhair hash tag on Twitter directly within the application. This will allow you to follow much of the Twitter natural hair conversation, even if it wasn’t started by Jael or myself.

✔ You can watch videos that Jael and I have created and uploaded to YouTube with the application. However, one of the coolest features is the ability to watch the best natural hair YouTube videos by several of your favorite vloggers using the Natural Hair Community app.

✔ Plus more! Including an undisclosed feature related to photos.

Why Build a Mobile Application?

Many of our visitors access the blog from their mobile devices. We had have some requests from mobile users who wanted an easier way to read articles from the blog. This gives you an easy way to read the latest articles directly on your mobile device, plus we included a few additional features.

Thoughts On The Purpose of the Natural Hair Community Application

This application wasn’t created to make money. That’s why the application is currently 100% free and doesn’t include any advertisements.

We could probably sell this application for $0.99 or include ads and make a few hundred dollars per month from the application, but we think it means more to offer a free solution initially. We may add more features to the app in the future and offer a free version and a premium (paid)version.

We honestly want to make it easier for you to access the information that we provide when you’re on the go.

So, if you’re an Android user head over to the Android Market and download the Natural Hair Community Application right now! For the iPhone users, we expect to receive approval from Apple within the next couple of weeks and then you can download the app for your device also.

Thank you for supporting Natural Hair Community! Take care.

Happy Birthday Natural Hair Community!

Natural Hair Community Welcome to another Natural Hair Community status report!

Every so often we bring to you a status report to share the progress of the blog with you and let you know what we plan to do next with the site.

It’s Our Birthday! February Represents Our One Year Anniversary Online

Over the past few months we focused primarily on two things:

1. Improving the quality of our content and organizing the existing content in a manner that’s more user friendly

2. Several mini-projects (more about these later)

It’s been quite a while since we’ve updated you on our progress. The last update was in October 2011. If you’re a new reader here, our status reports dive into what Jael and I have been working on for the site. Generally, we share complete details about the growth of the site and what we have planned in the coming months.

The first thing to share is a huge announcement – Jael is pregnant. She is currently 14 weeks pregnant and the baby has a nice strong heartbeat. We’re both looking forward to adding another member to the Byrd family tree.

The past few months have been really busy for us. We are working on several mini-projects for the site – including writing a book, creating a podcast and possibly something special for your mobile device. We’ve mentioned most of these things in previous updates. The biggest takeaway today is that many of the things that we’ve been working on are really close to being finalized and available to the public.

The podcast will be called “Natural Hair Talk” by Natural Hair Community

Jael and I finished recording the first episode of the podcast two weeks ago. We have outlined the first 10 episodes and plan to bring everyone really useful information about natural hair. It should be available in iTunes within the next month or so. The cover art for the podcast is still being tweaked a little bit, but the current draft cover art is below.

Natural Hair Talk

We’re Nearly Finished with Our First Book

We have substantially completed our first book. We’re going through the process of proofing and editing as needed. We’re also looking at adding some tools and templates into the text that will help you during your journey. The graphical design for the book has been completed also, but I’ll saved that for a special update where I go into great detail about what the book is all about and why we decided to write it.

Our Most Popular Content

During the past several months, the top 10 articles on the site were:

Note: These articles are listed in order of popularity based on the number of times the article has been read. I suggest that you read through some of the articles below if you haven’t read them yet.

  3. Natural Hair Recipes
  4. Protective Styles Are Critical
  5. How to Go Natural For Newbies
  6. I Hate The Natural Hair Movement
  7. Finally An Article On How to Really Grow Long Hair
  8. Top 5 Benefits of Transitioning
  9. What Men Really Think About Natural Hair
  10. How to Create a Natural Hair Regimen

Kenneth’s Favorite Articles – Based on personal opinion

Jael’s Favorite Articles – Based on personal opinion

Let’s look at a few numbers.

The growth of Natural Hair Community has been really good for a website that’s still relatively young. We turn one year old this month. During the last status report in October 2011, we reported receiving 15,668 visits to the site (equates to about 522 visitors per day). Month over month we continue to see growth in the number of visitors to the site. In January 2012, we received 30,248 visits to the site (equates to about 1,008 visitors per day). The number of visitors continues to grow each month and we continue to be pleased with the growth of the community.

I mention this is in nearly every status update, but we’re building some tremendous relationships with many different people. We’re enjoying the relationships that we’ve built on the site more than anything else.

What’s Next?

Before I talk about what’s next, I want to thank everyone who visited the blog within the past year. I remember a year ago, trying to get ready to launch the website and everything that’s associated with building a website. It proved to be a lot of work and I see why many bloggers give up after a period of time.

So, what’s next? We will “officially” launch the Natural Hair Community website. I know that sounds strange, since this is our one year anniversary. Although, if you have followed us since the beginning you may remember us saying that we were still in “beta” and hadn’t really launched “Natural Hair Community”. We have learned a lot about what the community wants from a natural hair website and we’re planning to deliver an incredible amount of content during the next year. We decided to take the first year to learn what it takes to run a website. Now we’re ready to take the next step and deliver what we believe will be a unique value proposition. It’s not something that I need to explain, because you will know it when you see it.

Furthermore, we continue to work on a natural hair book, a podcast and a new section of the site called “Natural Hairstyles”. I’ve mentioned the hairstyles section before, however my initial timeline on when it would be ready was fairly ambitious. Instead of giving you a hard deadline on when it will be ready, let’s just say it’s still in the works. It currently isn’t the number one priority at the moment, so it won’t be completed this month. It is something that several people have asked for and we continue to make progress on completing it. We want it to be really good when we release it, so that’s part of the reason that it hasn’t be posted on the website just yet. Don’t worry – because it’s coming.

Finally, be sure to connect with us on your favorite social network:

We take your suggestions seriously and continue to improve the quality of the information available on the site due to the wonderful feedback that you provide.

Take care!

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. In my family, this typically means tons of food, catching up with family members that I don’t see very often and watching football. I should take more time to sit down and think about the many things that I’m grateful for, but that list would take at least a few weeks to create – and probably much longer.

So here is a very personal (and very short) list of the things that I’m thankful for.

I’m grateful for my beautiful family.

This is one that I can’t find words for. Each day that I get to spend with my family is fantastic.

Additionally, I’m grateful for the outstanding community members of Natural Hair Community.

We have some of the most knowledgeable and passionate community members anywhere. I’m really thankful to each of you who post in the forums, leave comments and provide tips and techniques to other members. It’s really exciting to interact with each you. All of you are wonderful and make outstanding contributions to Natural Hair Community. Jael and I are extremely grateful for your time and support.

Kenneth and Jael

I’m grateful that I worked up the nerve to actually start writing articles about hair. I wasn’t really sure how a man would be received in the natural hair community. Nonetheless, those concerns have been alleviated.

I’ve never told this story publicly, but prior to starting Natural Hair Community, Jael and I had actually started separate websites. I had started a website around a very popular iPhone application that Jael and I both used. I spent several weeks building the website, writing an eBook and adding several articles to the site prior to launching.

At the same time, Jael was going through the conceptual design phase of Natural Hair Community. She was starting to determine the purpose of the site and create some initial content for the blog.

I can’t really remember the details of the conversation, but Jael asked if we should focus on just one project. Eventually, we decided that starting separate projects wasn’t a good idea. That’s the real story behind how a husband and wife decided to start blogging about natural hair.

We wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. Take care.

Natural Hair Community Status Report – Q3 2011

Natural Hair Community's Ideal Audience Each quarter we bring to you a community status report to share our progress with you and let you know what we plan to do next with the site.

October Represents Our 8th Month Online

Last quarter we focused on improving the existing content that we offer on the site. When we launched the site, we felt like there were certain articles and information that every natural hair site must contain – pillar articles. We focused on writing as many pillar articles as we could over the last quarter. We upgraded a significant portion of our existing content and will turn our focus to organizing our content better during the next quarter.

Natural Hair Community Podcast

A few weeks ago, we asked you to spend a few minutes completing a survey about the upcoming Natural Hair Community Podcast. Thanks to everyone who participated in the survey. We ended receiving well over 100 responses, which is incredible.

We now have enough information to help us develop the podcast and begin outlining episodes. Now we can spend time focusing on the things that you want to listen to, which will make the podcast a more enjoyable experience for you.

We like to be transparent with our site members and blog readers. We believe that being open is an important part of building a community and we would like for you to participate in every facet of what’s presented on the Natural Hair Community site.

This is your community.

We figured that you might be interested in the understanding what the podcast will be about and how other survey respondents answered the questions.

Note: We know that we won’t be able to please everyone – that’s impossible. The plan is to focus on the things that the majority of our audience wants to hear.

So, without further ado – let’s dive directly into the results of the podcast survey.

Natural Hair Community Podcast Survey Results

Question 1: What kind of content and/or information would you like to listen to on The Natural Hair Community Podcast? Please take into consideration that the content is delivered in an audio format. (Check all that apply)

  • Hair Growth Tips (85.0%)
  • Natural Hair Product Reviews (74.4%)
  • Natural Hair Recipes (69.2%)
  • Latest News / Trends in Natural Hair Community (61.7%)
  • Interviews with New Naturals and their Questions (57.9%)
  • Interviews with Natural Hair Bloggers (57.1%)
  • Advanced Natural Hair Topics (Like Porosity, Hair Typing Systems, Etc.) (54.1%)
  • Terminology Used within the Natural Hair Community (33.8%)
  • Non-Hair Stuff / Other Things We Do (22.6%)
  • Other (8.3%)

Question 1

My thoughts on the results:

It’s clear that the majority of our audience expects pure natural hair content that they can immediately apply to their natural hair journey. With this in mind, we’re not going to spend time talking about things that aren’t immediately useful to you. There won’t be any casual chatting between Jael and I. We will just dive directly into giving you the information that you want to hear us discuss: primarily natural hair growth, product reviews and hair recipes. The cool thing is that we can tie these topics in with the remaining survey topics as needed.

Question 2: What is the perfect length for a podcast episode for you?

  • 5-15 Minutes (46.6%)
  • 15-30 Minutes (38.3%)
  • 30-45 Minutes (12.8%)
  • 45-60 Minutes (2.3%)

Question 2

My thoughts on the results:

It’s pretty clear that the podcast should definitely be less than 30 minutes long, but that’s really were the clarity ends. The majority of our audience wants a “quick” podcast that averages 15 minutes or less, however a significant percentage of the respondents would rather have a longer podcast – in the 15 – 30 minute time frame.

So, we’ll see how this goes initially and give you the opportunity to provide feedback over time.

To be completely honest, as long as we provide a high quality podcast the length of the episode won’t matter nearly as much.

Question 3: Will you listen to our podcast?

Yes (98.5%)
No (1.5%)

Question 2

My thoughts on the results:

The people who would most likely listen to the podcast are the people who decided to participate in the survey – so the overwhelming positive results aren’t surprising.

For the people who answered the question “No”, we respect your honesty.

Once again, I would like thank each person who participated in this survey and for helping to shape the future of The Natural Hair Community Blog (and soon to be Natural Hair Podcast).

Natural Hair Blueprint

We’re writing a book called “Natural Hair Blueprint”. It will cover several natural hair topics – including (but definitely not limited to) the following list of topics:

  • Troubleshooting

We have already purchased the domain name that will dedicated to information about the “Natural Hair Blueprint”. We will be providing more information about this book and the bonus items that we will be offering for the people who purchase this book within the coming weeks.

Let’s look at a few numbers.

The growth of Natural Hair Community has been tremendous for a website that’s still relatively new. If you remember, in our last status report, I told you that we received 3,733 visitors to the site during our first month online – March 2011. During the month of September we received 15,668 visits to the site. Site visitors continue to grow month-over-month and we’re pleased with the progress of the site.

As I’ve mentioned previously, the best part is that we’re actually building some incredible relationships with several people within the natural hair community.

How to Contact Us

I’ve had a few people email me or message me on Twitter that were angry that I hadn’t replied to their message. Jael and I get a lot of emails and Twitter messages every day. If we don’t respond relatively soon –
usually within 48 hours, I promise we’re not ignoring you. The volume is difficult to manage sometimes, so we may have missed you. If you don’t hear back from us, please try sending your message again. We always respond to our site members first, so if you ask a question on our news feed , you will receive a much quicker response. We discuss the best way to reach us on our contact page.

What’s Next

We’re preparing a new section of the site called “Natural Hairstyles”. It’s something that many people have been asking for since the beginning and we’re nearly ready to deliver. Also, we will continue to expand our social media presence. We’re more active on Facebook now and have slowly begin to add content to YouTube. You can follow us on these platforms using the links below.

The Natural Hair Community Podcast is Coming. Help Please!

Natural Hair Community Podcast

Jael and I are very excited to announce that the Natural Hair Community Podcast is being developed. We’ve wanted to start a podcast since we originally launched the site and now is the time.

All of the necessary equipment will be delivered this week. We can’t wait to get on the microphone!

However, before we start cranking out podcast episodes and getting our podcast into iTunes, we need your help.

We would be really appreciative if you would take less than 2 minutes to complete our anonymous 3 question survey regarding the upcoming podcast. It would really help us determine exactly what the show will be about, because what really matters most to us – is what you want, not what we want.

Again, please help us out by clicking here and completing this very short survey.

Natural Hair Community Status Report

Kenneth and Jael Welcome to the Natural Hair Community status report!

We launched Natural Hair Community in late-February 2011, but didn’t really start writing consistently until March or April.

I want to share our progress with you and where we plan to go next with the site.

The Goal Behind this Post is Simple

It allows you to understand exactly what we have planned for the site.

It allows us to be transparent with you and keep things in perspective.

It allows us to keep track of our progress and focus on improving each and every month.

We want you to take part in everything that we do on this site, because this is your community. I hope you enjoy this status update. After reading this, please provide comments on what you would like to see next from us in the comments section.

July Represents Our 5th Month Online

During our first four months online, we constantly asked people to give us feedback on what they would like to see from this site. Several people provided constructive feedback that will undoubtedly make this site better over the next few months. We also want to focus on improving some of the existing content that we have on the site – you can expect major updates to the resource page and the natural hair recipes page.

Natural Hair Community Membership Card

Community Newsletter

When we initially launched the site we decided to offer a short free eBook called “Going Natural: How to Transition from Relaxed to Natural Hair in 7 Simple Steps” to each person who signed up for our free newsletter. The newsletter has been well received and the number of subscribers continues to grow every month. If you’re not a newsletter subscriber yet, you can sign up below.

Survey

In March, we asked all of our newsletter subscribers to complete a survey to make sure that we were meeting the needs of our readers. We received some great feedback on what many individuals wanted to see next on the site. I want to let you know that we take your feedback seriously.

For example, 81% of our audience said they wanted to have a section of the blog that specifically listed our best content. This data point lead to us creating the Best of Natural Hair Community page.

We also asked everyone to provide us with two questions that they have concerning natural hair. We received a long list of questions and have started to address several of those questions in actual blog posts.

One newsletter subscriber asked me to address “what men think about natural hair”.

If we had not been specifically asked to speak on that topic, the ongoing saga of Patrick and Keisha probably wouldn’t have happened. So, your comments and suggestions really fuel the content that we write for this site. Please keep those comments and questions coming.

Natural Hair Survey

Furthermore, we’re constantly making changes to the website. We make tweaks to the structure, site design and layout based on the feedback we receive from our site visitors. Also, our goal is to respond to every single comment that we receive on the site.

Our Most Popular Content

During the last few months, the top ten most popular posts on our site are:

June was our 4th month online and we received 8,130 visitors to the site. The number of site visitors that we receive has constantly grown each month and we’re off to a really good start this month. We continue to be encouraged by the growth of the site.

The best part is that we’re actually starting to build relationships with many of our site visitors. I tell people all the time to contact me on the site, email me, or hit me up on Facebook/Twitter. We honestly don’t mind helping you when you have questions. That’s why we started this website.

It is important to note that Jael and I get a lot of emails and Twitter messages. For example, as of 10 minutes ago, Jael and I have a combined 8,403 Twitter followers. As you might imagine, we get quite a few Twitter messages every day. If we don’t respond, I promise we’re not ignoring you. We may have missed your question because the volume is difficult to manage sometimes. If you don’t hear back from us within 48 hours, please try sending your message again. We always respond to site members first, so if you send us a message on this site – you will usually receive a quicker response.

Products

One of our survey questions asked participates to rate their interest in several different natural hair products and services. The first product that we plan to release will be available within the next few months. I wish I could provide more details about this, but we’re still working through some of the logistics.

The Next Three Months

We plan to expand our social media presence. We have consistently used Twitter since day one, but now we’re starting to expand our reach to both Facebook and YouTube. If you’re not following us on Facebook or YouTube, then check us out there because we have thought of some original ways to use those networks over the next few months.

We have a new section of the site that we’re designing and we’re going to need help from our site members and readers. We promise it won’t take much of your time, but if you’re willing to help us – you and every other natural out there will benefit from this awesome feature that we’re planning. We’re constantly striving to be innovative and I believe that this is truly game-changing.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this status report. We have some really cool things coming up for you during the next three months. Until the next status report, keep those questions and suggestions coming our way.

Natural Hair Community Radio Interview

Interview with Kenneth and Jael

In late February 2010, recently after launching Natural Hair Community, Jael and I were interviewed by Nappturalite Radio. In this interview, we reveal what inspired us to create the site. We respond to the fact that there are several great natural hair networks online, but speak specifically to what makes our site unique. We also spoke about our strategy for Natural Hair Community in 2010 – detailing what’s on the horizon for the community.

Natural Hair Dictionary Coming Soon

During the last few weeks, we have been working on making available a dictionary of natural hair terminology. The work is nearly finished and should be available on the site within the next two weeks.

Whether you are newly natural or have years of experience being natural, you will find useful information in this dictionary. Everything from bra strap length (BSL) hair to the system for classifying hair, the most often used natural hair terms are included.

Natural Hair Community Search Engine

Natural Hair Search Engine Have you ever been looking for something related to natural hair online and failed to find it using search engines like Google, Yahoo or Bing?

Those search engines are all very useful, but since there are millions of web pages online that include the phrase “natural hair” or a variant of that phrase it becomes difficult at times to find exactly what you’re looking for. This requires the user to look through several pages of search results in order to find what they’re looking for.

Our belief is that finding natural hair information online needs to be easier and we plan to offer the best tools and resources available online to Natural Hair Community.

We have developed a natural hair search engine. To develop our search engine we started with Google’s search algorithm and tuned it to specifically return relevant natural hair information.

So, the search functionality works much like Google, but it’s specifically tuned to help you find natural hair products and information online. The search results will be presented in a list and usually the most relevant articles are shown first and so forth. Our search results may consist of web pages, videos, pictures, and other types of content.

If you notice that a particular site shows up often in the search results, but rarely offers anything of value, then please let us know and we can remove that website from future search results. Similarly, if there are sites out there that should be added, we can have the ability to include additional websites in the search results as well. We want our members to have access to the best available natural hair information.
